 the guys at work we're discussing what metric should you really go by to determine if a movie is awful or not on Rotten Tomatoes based on critic score they kind of decided that 20% is the line if it's below 20% on the critic's course you know with anything coming out new well it probably has absolutely nothing redeemable if it's above 20% it may not be a good movie but there might be something redeemable that you can at least enjoy out of the movie if you want a good case study for that Transformers franchise  hey guys hardware hound here so we have another solid-state drive to review from crucial and you're probably thinking like you've ever done one of those before well I have done a review on before but it was a written review on my site at pure over clocked dot-com you know it's kind of my written home on the web where the blogger is kind of my blog home on the web so even though this might be my first blog review for crucial at least I have something to compare to so crucial has released an MX 500 and if you didn't really pay close attention to one number you might have thought they just released the same hard drive but they did so they've got a solid-state disk that has a new controller some new flash memory and ideally some new performance we are gonna check that out soon but I do want to make a quick mention if you want to know what this super comfy chair is that I'm sitting in it's a win I'll have some links in the description below for my old reviews and stuff for that so you can check them out but I really like to share so alright let's go ahead and talk about this drive, we're gonna get into some software first we'll get into some testing results but we'll be able to wrap this up pretty nicely soon so one of these is an MX 300 in the other one is an MX 500 I'll give you a hint it's the other one okay so as you can tell crucial has not changed much when it comes to their look of the drive there it's really straightforward it's the same kind of branding if you kind of shift this in the light you can see the letters MX very lightly in engraved kind of boss I don't even know it's it's just the graphics on the label so you can see the little bit of MX there kind of an old hand but otherwise, we've got a nice little gray thing and then just you know flipping it over will actually have our various levels of label label information there's our MX 500 on the a label that you are thinking I was gonna have the wrong Drive there for a second huh so yeah very very simple straightforward nothing too fancy so yeah you know good-looking drive I'm not opposed to it kind of prefer black personally but you know once again is his personal preference now one of the other things that crucial include is this guy and I've wondered about this guy for quite some time and never been able to figure t out and I mean I guess I just assumed that it was just packaging this is a spacer so some two and a half inch drives are a little bit thicker than what these crucial drives are and so to keep the drive from bouncing around say  like in the laptop compartment and you  know this probably won't be such a big deal for desktops but as far as a laptops concerned you drop this spacer in the gap of your laptop fills up that extra room and then your your solid-state drive will fit in there perfect alrighty I do want to go through this quick little just a quick little guide on how this works so crucial includes a Cronus true image to do like quick cloning or hard drive I really like it I've used it a few times now and they've just streamlined it more and more to where it's just kind of fantastic crucial comm slash the Cronus  if you just do that it'll take you this page and if you click on these guys these are just user guides so we'll actually, click up here to start downloading and so I've already done that so I'm just gonna go over to my downloads here and as you can see I've download lots of things in life and so it's actually this little exe file here this little application file so once you download the Cronus you just gotta install it and so we're gonna go ahead and get this baby unpacked and here we go okay so once you have the application installed then you are going to clone the disk and it's just it's going to be this simple definitely stick with the automatic you can do manual if you're more advanced user and you want to control some things but the automatic is gonna be really easy so you stick just  you start with the drive here that  you've got that you want to clone so this will probably be the drive that you got your operating system installed on it's going to think through that little process of getting the image select your destination disk so like in this case I want us to transfer everything off of the MX 300 that I was testing to the new mx-5 hundred particularly because I want to run one last benchmark so it's saying I have can useful data yeah okay whatever I know that so then once you got all that there that's it you've got everything that you need to do it's going to show you what the image looks like before what it looks like after as you can see I'll still have spares spare room so then you're gonna click proceed that's it that's cloning the disk now at this point it's gonna need to do the restart if you do not restart the computer it will not proceed with the operation so if you're definitely committed to doing that click the restart everything goes off and it'll do the clone that's simple so now as you can see once you do the restart it's starting to load up here and sorry for the grain is I keep the lights down a little bit to keep the light from - keep the monitor showing a little bit better but then you know when the monitors off doesn't do well so yeah automatically BAM it's gonna do this process and most of the time so I've been doing this at work I've been cloning old-school hard disk drives onto crucial SSDs and this process was only taking like maybe five or ten minutes so it's amazing how fast it goes this is awesome I love what crucial is doing  with this and that's why I want to show  it off all right guys as you probably know by now I like to do a benchmark set that kind of gives us a good big picture of how this drive is going to perform any drive in a just all-around general basis to try to cover most everything I  don't like to get into the weeds of  little tiny benchmarks cuz even though they do have their purpose in life I think most of us just want to know in general so strive gonna work for the kind of things I want to do for it the The problem with that is is it takes time sometimes in some trial and error really put all that together but at this point I've really got a good grasp of the reviews of the benchmarks I really wanted to show and so we're gonna dive right into that so for starters crystal disk is kind of the industry standard test your drive with that throw up some numbers but the reason why I like crystal disks is  crystal disk is a great benchmark to kind of measure against what the company is claiming they're read they're sequential read/write performances and their IOPS rating and I didn't realize crystal disk could do this but when I save my file to a text to make sure I kept the results it gave me the IOPS ratings tuned I was like nice so as you can see the MX 500 not only is a sizable boost over the MX 300 which is impressive but it's right it's it's performance numbers are coming out  really nicely close to what crucial says  the drive's performance is which I was really happy about so after that I wanted to still show kind of just how the various different sizes of you know datasets can affect performance and one of the really great easy ones to see is a to it's a great benchmark for just kind of going through various sizes of data and showing you what the read and write performance was if you take close look at the numbers you will see the MX 500 again it's got some nice boost but what was interesting is the MX 500 was way more consistent as that was going up that curve going up towards the higher larger data sets the MX 300 had a few spots in there where it just taped for some reason you just got some of those bars where they're just really short compared to the rest of the graph so it looks like it crucial is doing something right here at the MX 500 to sure up the weaknesses that the 300 had so after that I like to get some ideas of some scores that give us a bigger picture of all right how does this thing score what kind of percentage boosts are we looking overall and so of course a really great overall score benchmark is anvil anvil does a great job of putting all the numbers together and giving you a final score and so if you compare our two discs there we're getting about a 10% overall boost on anvil at least synthetically over the MX 300 with our MX 5 that's great that's the kind of thing I wanted to see there but then the other thing I want to see is real-world performance or something that would reflect that well as you all know once you get past the hard disk spinning hard disk straight the stage and upgrade to solid state that is a huge jump after that sometimes you can't even really tell the difference in the performance unless you're doing something very very specific that really highlights a specific performance out of a specific drive and so with that PC mark 10 was a great benchmark because they have an app startup bench and as you can see running both drives there was just a tiny little difference between the two and I think that's what you're gonna reflect here you're gonna see that at least in real- world performance you might notice some sum up some improvements in some ways but overall you're probably not gonna feel a huge difference it's a better Drive but you shouldn't be blown out of the water by the performance and honestly you shouldn't be blown out of the water on performance of any SATA Drive because we've pretty well seen that SATA is a kind of bandwidth throttling solid state which means you usually have to go to name MX 500 though amazing job on the benchmarks it does increase the performance like crucial wanted it to like they're claiming it to do so now let's go ahead look at some pricing wrap this review of them as always we've got to finish off with that price and see how the drive measures up crucial zem X 500 has released at a hundred and thirty-five dollars on both new egg and Amazon and there is availability doesn't look like they're stock issues and that's for the 500 gig version of the the drive which is the one that I'm reviewing today that price is phenomenal it is super competitive so here's what I found when I was comparing that I either has off-brand drives that you're either gonna kind of question their dependability or you're gonna kind of question their performance where you can see some really huge tanks and like say random usually a random right or sequential right you'll see some like mace massive tanks in that performance to keep all the rest of the numbers high and crucially doesn't have that problem in fact crucial is MX 500 is really just it's floating right up there in the level of Sam's son's higher-end SATA drives so you know obviously it's not going to hold up to the names but as far as SATA performance is concerned you're gonna have a hard time finding a drive that's going to have any sizable increase in performance from the MX 500 the problem is is that the drives that are considered the higher-end performances are way more expensive the The problem is this drive eats just beats the crap all over their MX 300 because their MX 300 now is not really available and what's left is kind of super high in price and when the MX 300 was their mainstay drive it was about the same price so they're just like giving you this free performance is another thing I noticed is some drives that are similarly priced are the 480 gig variants where this one is a full 500 gigs now granted the MX 300 came at the 525 mark so it's kind of nice to get those extra 25 gigs but I'm not gonna sniff at $500 at an amazing price point with that kind of crazy performance so guys this is an amazing Drive and I'm going to change up exact a little bit really just for this one Drive how I do the award I would tell you right now that the crucial MX 500 be the drive to get unless money just doesn't matter to you and you can throw it out the window then yeah fine buy the most expensive name drive you can get but if you can get a 500 gig or one terabyte crucial M X 500 that right there will be the best improvement to your PC gaming work whatever performance that you can get in their price and performance is impossible to beat yeah maybe some things perform well but they do not cost less maybe some things cost less but they definitely don't perform well this guy does both of it this is a pure over clocked must-have device I would say if you were going to build a computer and you wanted to split the the balance between performance and costs that's your drive right there crucial MX 500 get the capacity that works for you there you go guys so I  hope you liked this review let me know  as always in the comments below crucial did a great job here check them out I'll have
