hi my name is malik mursaleen thank you for tuning in to basketball tutor today
we're going to discuss what is the right age to begin training your son or daughter in the sport of basketball with aau and amateur basketball becoming so popular more parents are looking to get their kids a step ahead of the competition occasionally I'll have a parent contact me and say my son is four years old i'm interested in getting some training for him do you work with children at this age there was a time when i might have said yes but these days it's a definite no let me tell you why and what I've learned from my experience the main reason is because of the attention span of a child but the average duration of a child's attention span varies from 10 to 25 minutes so after doing some drills for about 10 minutes i start hearing things like what time is it i can do this i bet you can't do that i can do this can i go to the bathroom can i get some water what time is this finished every child is different every child has their own unique way of learning it's rare to see a child that's passionate about the game at four and five years old but in this video I'm going to give you a few tips on how you can instill this passion within your child now not everyone is meant to be that next star but basketball is part of American culture so just knowing how to play is a great way for children to make new friends and develop a rapport with their peers amateur sports in america is starting to become a very lucrative business and there's a lot of personal trainers out there that will take your money i want to show you how to spend your money wisely when it comes to training your child to be better at this sport children ages two three four and five typically don't watch college basketball or nba basketball wnba basketball so on and so forth you know it is so now what you can do to get your child to learn the game and watch the game on tv is to watch basketball movies with your son or daughter toddlers tend to have trouble following the game on tv but they're better able to follow the drama of a movie movies are designed to grab your attention so just by watching basketball movies your child can learn a lot about the game certain rules in the game like what's a foul what's out of bounds what's a foul shot what's a three point shot where's the half court line some of these questions can be answered just by watching cartoon basketball movies here is a list of my all-time favorite recommended basketball movies some movies are a bit more age-appropriate than others obviously you should use your discretion and pick the best ones for you and your family we got uncle drew very good the pistol birth of a legend this is one of my all-time favorites this movie in particular made my son fall in love with the game michael jordan's playground rebound the legend of earl manigault a little bit edgy towards the end but great to learn about the mistakes that a lot of players make in basketball as far as school the outside influences off the court space jam one and two like mike one and two air bud coach carter the amateur is a really good movie for uh modern day athletes blue chips air up there teen wolf teen wolf is classic rebound with martin lawrence the mighty max and full court miracle i'll put the links below if you're interested in purchasing these movies in a digital or dvd format now next what you should do is turn your house into an indoor full court yes you heard it right turn your place into a mini gym you want to buy the proper size indoor hoop for your child and begin playing let your inner child step on out and play play play play play and i get it parents are busy we all have a lot going on but try to set aside some time to play with your child the more that they see you into it and playing the more that they're gonna be into the game [Music] two three three also you want to be sure to purchase a hoop that's the right size for your infant or toddler a hoop like this one here is going to have to be put away and set to the side until this young one is old enough and strong enough where he could actually throw the ball in the hoop so this might be a little bit more appropriate for four or five-year-olds maybe even three years [Music] old this hoop right here is the perfect size but it's hanging off the doorknob so I don't think it's going to last too long in that spot there so this is something that is temporary if you want to instill this passion you're going to have to invest in something that's going to last good girl [Music] oh shoot wow [Music] now the best hoop to get for tyler's is the plastic little tight swoop and it's perfect for babies and two and three year olds the little tyke swoops are the most durable and last the longest through wear and tear from my experience so i'm gonna put the link in the description to help you get started with your full court indoor gym today so when basketball is introduced to an eight or nine year old who has never played the game they don't have the motor skills that are required to dribble shoot and pass the ball you know it's very similar to having a surgery or having a major injury right as an adult and after this injury you have to go to a rehab right you may have to learn how to walk again you have to relearn how to do these things for the first time well you have to put yourself in that situation as a child the child is learning everything for the first time so if they're introduced to a basketball for the first time at eight years old or nine years old the muscles that are used for bouncing the ball shooting the ball are underdeveloped so when you're first starting off at a young age it's not so much about teaching your child the game it's about showing them how to play the game the best games to play on your hoop would be horse 21 they call it 21 in new york but it's called utah chicago you got around the world 101s done contests shooting contests obstacle courses i mean you can get creative you can come up with your own games okay so now once playing has become a part of your child's everyday life and now you're starting to notice that your child has a passion for the game you can see that they have the basic skill sets of passing dribbling and shooting and watching the ball which is very important basketball cannot be played unless one can catch the ball very well now when you start seeing all the fundamentals coming together within your child's game now you might want to approach a basketball team or talk to a personal trainer and this is the way that you can have the edge above the rest of the competition by starting off early through play so just by following these steps by playing and watching the movies your child will have a basketball IQ that is superior to the competition so often i'll be running a training program parents that bring their child and a child will be shy they they might be intimidated they feel like the other kids are better than them so they don't even want to get started they're trying to put their head down and kind of cower out the lesson and you know start crying and saying they don't want to be left alone so when you're doing this at home when you're allowing them to play a lot at home when it's time to go to the triad to the workout this is normal everyday life it's nothing new it's just play and and here's a whole bunch of other kids here so you want basketball to be an activity they've already experienced this is just regular play and fun so should you get a personal trainer for your four-year-old me personally i like to work with ages nine and up but i will make an exception for a child that is very talented but if i were to take a job with a four or five year old all we would do is play and some parents are not going to understand that with children you want to make everything a game so that they don't even realize that they're learning or learning a skill if it's a game if I can turn it into a game and make it so that you're having fun the child won't even realize that they're practicing or developing the motor skills to help them be a better ball player they'll just see it as fun and that's what they want so below the age of nine it's all about developing the motor skills so if basketball wasn't included in the development of the motor skills before the age of nine along with a short attention span it's going to take me a bit longer to teach that child advanced basketball skills so before you put your son or daughter in a basketball program a team or with a personal trainer you want to make sure that you have already built the foundation to their basketball skill set okay bye take care.
