if I had a dollar for every Asus rog Strix model I've reviewed in the past year or so I'd have enough to buy a
subway on a Tuesday but the one we have here today is truly the most special amongst them all because it's rocking intel's latest 12th generation alder lake hardware so the guy we have here has intel's 12700h
i7 processor 16 gigabytes of speedy ddr5 ram additionally we also have a generous one terabyte solid-state drive the RTX 3060 graphics card with a total of 6GB VRAM dedicated of course and we also have wi-fi 6c as well as the latest Bluetooth standards and lastly, this is a 17-inch laptop so we've got a pretty large full HD display and there is a ton of stuff to talk about with regards to this laptop so I'm super excited for this review so gamers buckle in let's go starting with a real quick unboxing as you can see the rg Strix comes in a pretty large box which is expected of a 17-inch laptop now with that said once you remove the content seal and proceed
to open the box inside you have this behemoth size laptop which makes total sense of course remove the plastic packaging and here it is in all its glory but more on that in a quick minute past that you have a colossal 240-watt charging brick which again makes sense given the kind of hardware we're packing here and the dedicated dc charging port pin again no usbc which would just be too much water to transfer over that
anyway so you also have a wall outlet cable to plug into the adapter itself past that you have a paperback hard box once you open this box inside you'll find the quick start guide warranty regulation information but you'll also
find a smaller black box open this and you have this really cool keychain holder thingy by Asus just looks on
point finally you'll notice you have these two blade-like looking objects these are in fact plates for the edge of
the g7 laptop i'll show you more of that in a second now the asus rg strix is a very popular laptop amongst gamers and for good reason it looks flashy it has all that fancy rgb hipster stuff and who wouldn't love it i mean seriously this thing is just a living walking breathing rgb machine with that said though asus continues to use a similar design we've seen with previous rog strikes so the g7 isn't really all that different you still have the same overall hybrid metallic and plastic build now one thing i have to mention is that this laptop has a overall weight of 5.95 pounds making it one of the heavier 17 inch machines out there but again this thing is loaded with a lot of stuff so keep that in mind now starting off with the top side you have a nice metallic finish it's cool to the touch it feels really premium you'll also notice you have this small linear diagonal line and you kind of have little like icons of the rog logo that go it's a pretty cool touch you'll also appreciate the fact that you have this nice massive asus rg strix logo and yes it does technically glow or have a backlighting if you will i'll show that as well and you'll also notice the fact that you have this extended back over here which has a bunch of air intake vents this is of course to make sure the laptop is well ventilated and finally you have that rog strix plate that i mentioned about this can be swapped with the other two i showed earlier io port diversity is pretty decent on this machine as well so on the back side you'll notice you have two heat exhaust vents which of course is
required for a gaming machine now right next to that you have the good old standard dc charging port you also have a ethernet jack next to that you have a hdmi 2.1 port additionally you'll notice you have two usb c ports one of these is thunderbolt 4 the other one is a standard display port now on the side you'll notice you have again another heat exhaust vent you have two usb a 3.2 ports you also have the good old headphone jack and on the final side there are no i o ports but you do have the final heat exhaust vent the bottom side of this laptop is some pretty standard stuff so basically you'll notice you have a bunch of air intake vents and you do have two dedicated fans one for the cpu and one for the gpu you also notice you have these rubber pads and ac is being dramatic as usual has put some fancy stuff like don't you dare or sorry for those who there and all that stuff you know aces stuff you'll also notice on the corner you have a two speaker grilles one on either side so this is a stereo speaker setup and like i mentioned earlier it is a hard tpu finish at the bottom side as soon as you unfold this laptop you are almost immediately reminded of just how massive this 17 inch laptop is i mean seriously
the palm rest here has more surface area than some new york city apartments it's huge with that said you also have an equally impressive trackpad in the center now what makes the trackpad really cool is that it has a premium glass surface finish and the clicks are super tactile this is one of those trackpads where you can actually use it for gaming which is a rare sight also there is no flex whatsoever it's really well-calibrated and I can wholeheartedly endorse it making our way to the keyboard you'll notice you have slightly smaller keycaps compared to the previous generation despite that though this is a very nice keyboard so you have a generous amount of key travel also the actual feedback on the keystrokes is very tactile it's great for general typing or gaming, unfortunately, and keys are no longer translucent rather they blend in with the rest of the keyboard
but don't worry because you'll notice that the right side of the chassis is translucent and you can actually kind of
see the inner hardware pretty cool stuff and a cool design choice you also have a full size 10 keypad additionally yes this keyboard is fully RGB backlit so you can let your inner color maniac take over directly above the keyboard is where you'll find the two-tier hinge system I can't say I'm too happy about it because those hinges are way too exposed this could be problematic in terms of long-term wear and tear despite this there is a rather limited amount of wobble and the hinge definitely seems to stay in place now you'll notice the
display fitting is a little unique so you have a very fat chin at the bottom now granted they have the artist x
branding but it could be a little bit thinner you know but despite that, you'll be happy to know you have ultra-thin bezels that really make this display look super sleek also you have a very thin forehead but don't get impressed by that because Asus has yet again chosen to not include a basic webcam at your expense seriously there are two 300 laptops out there that have webcams don't know why they don't include it's just it's shameful on their part even in its base configuration the new g7 has an absolutely stunning display so you have a standard revolution of full HD or 1080p but you have an overkill refresh rate of 360 hertz take that in
so as long as your machine or this machine can support that kind of frame rate you can go up to that fps that's insane you also have an IPS panel with a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and viewing angles are pretty good for the most part in terms of color accuracy you have a 100 srgb rating which means if you're doing professional activities like let's say video editing photo editing color grading, for the most part, this is a very high-quality display and colors just look very lively and flush you'll also be happy to know you have an anti-glitter
screen unfortunately you only have a peak brightness of just 300 nits which means under really bright settings
despite the anti-glare, you still do get a fair bit of reflection that can be a little problematic at times performance
needless to say, is absolutely mind-blowing on this machine because why shouldn't it be you have the latest i7
the processor you have ddr5 ram onboard so day-to-day tasks like web browsing or you know word processing or watching videos on the web are going to be good in fact it's almost insulting to even talk about those because of just how easy it's going to be for this laptop more demanding tasks like let's say 4k video editing is also super smooth on this machine so you can have multiple layers of 4k footage edit them as you please and you rarely ever get any frame drops rendering times are also fantastic it's a great productivity tool as well
now in the gaming department which is the most important of course the rtx 3060 with its six gigabytes of vram just takes it away entirely most games will run at the highest or almost highest setting and games i do maternal for example which are nearly maxed out get you a steady 150 fps or even higher sometimes non-stop and it just seems like a little breeze for this machine gaming laptops are notorious for running super hot well because they're so small but this one is an exception for sure so the massive body of the g7 creates for some fantastic heat dissipation so under its absolute peak load this laptop can hit average surface temperatures just over 46 degrees celsius but more realistic sustained loads will get you around 38 to 39 degrees celsius which is pretty cool again for a gaming laptop and under low loads or idle loads you can go as little as 22 degrees celsius now fat noise can get quite loud understandably you can hit levels of upwards of around 54 decibels but that's usually in short bursts and if you're not doing anything too intensive the fans are actually pretty quiet speaking
of performance if you guys are enjoying this post make sure you hit that like button it also gives me the motivation to keep producing more quality content for you awesome people thanks for watching let's continue battery life is not the strongest element of this laptop but it's a gaming laptop.
